Harold Ashfield

We are sorry to have to report the news that Harold Ashfield - Past President of Sutton & District BA (2008), and Life Member of Epsom Court BC - passed away on Monday 18th January 2021, due to the Covid19 virus.  Many of you will have played with Harold over the years, as well as his wife Olive who passed away last year, and will recall his gentle and friendly manner - on and off the green.

Peter Gamage

Sadly Peter Gamage passed away this year. Peter was a member at SUPREME BC and a very keen & skilful bowler, he had been involved with Sutton and District Bowling Association over many years, and amongst other roles,  Peter had been our webmaster. We are pleased to announce that Brian Collis (Epsom BC) has agreed to take over this position.

S&DBA Matches 2020

2019 S&DBA Competitions - Finals Day Results

The finals day was held at Malden Manor BC on Saturday 21st September 2019.  Although the sunny weather played its part, it was wonderful to see lots of spectators surrounding all sides of the green and being treated to some excellent and exciting bowling throughout the day. To highlight just two matches, the St Raphael’s required an extra end to separate the two pairs whilst the Yonwin was not settled until the penultimate bowl on the final rink to finish.

To download a copy of the results of the S&DBA Finals day please click here.

A cheque was presented to Mr David Hobson of Blesma for £380.

Thanks to Malden Manor BC for providing a beautiful green and great hospitality.

2018 S&DBA Finals Day, 22nd September

2018 S&DBA FINALS DAY AT WALLINGTON B.C. SATURDAY 22ND SEPTMBER

Please see separate sheet for the Finals Day Order Of Play and Finalists (click on the link).

To those of you whose Clubs have finalists, please would you ensure that your players and / or captain are aware of when they are playing. Clubs concerned are Carshalton, Carshalton Beeches, Cheam, Cheam Fields, Chessington, Chipstead, Epsom, Malden Manor, Mitcham, Supreme, Sutton and Wallington - exactly half of our Affiliated Clubs have a presence on Finals Day.

Please ensure that your finalists are aware that they should play in Whites / Club Shirts. For those playing in the morning session, please aim to have bowls (with club stickers) available for inspection at 10am; similarly, in the afternoon session, bowls available for inspection at 2pm.

Spectators from all clubs are welcome, and we are delighted to have David Hobson from Blesma (https://blesma.org) present for the morning session. Blesma, as you will know, is one of the charitable organisations that we support through running the mens Blesma Pairs and, for the first time, the ladies Blesma Pairs. Blesma's Mission is "Enabling limbless veterans to lead independent and fulfilling lives".

Wallington BC will be providing tea / coffee during the day. Additionally, bacon rolls will be available before start of play and a Ploughmans will be available at lunchtime. Cost - Bacon Roll plus a Ploughmans £4.50; Ploughmans only £3.50, payable on the day. To help with the catering supplies, Wallington would appreciate an indication of people who are interested in these please let Margaret Woods know, ideally by Tuesday 18th September, by e-mail at
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

I am sure that you are aware that parking at Wallington is limited and to make things a little more awkward, earlier this week, the entrance to Grosvenor Road from Park Lane / Boundary Road was blocked off due to the ongoing Gas main repair / replacement. For those who will be using cars, therefore, please allow plenty of time to find on street parking. For those who will be using public transport, the Club is a comfortable 10 minute walk from Wallington Railway station, and there are also plenty of bus routes that stop at the station.

Lets hope for fine weather and excellent day of bowls - whether playing or watching as the matches unfold.

Hon Secretary
SDBA

2018 Past Times Finals at Sutton B.C.

The Past Times Finals at Sutton B.C. on Saturday 15 September was blessed with fine, mainly sunny weather.

In the Men's Final Old Coulsdon took an early lead which they managed to retain throughout the match. In the Ladies Final both rinks were closely fought until around the halfway stage after which Purley Bury then built up a significant lead on rink 2 resulting in a comfortable overall win for them.

The scores were:

Ladies Final: Purley Bury 39, Old Coulsdon 29
Men's Final: Old Coulsdon 51, Wallington 36

Annual trophies were presented to the winning teams and gift tokens to each finalist team. Keepsake plaques will be engraved and given to each finalist team for their retention. The nett proceeds of the competition entry fees will be donated to a worthy charity actively serving the local Surrey community and which will be announced shortly.  Photographs of the finalists will be posted shortly on the Past Times Pictures page of this S&DBA website.

Our grateful thanks are due to Sutton B.C for allowing us to us their excellent facilities. Many thanks also to Charlie Murphy who umpired immaculately.
